What is box breathing? 🤔
Box breathing is a four-step breathing technique during which you breathe in, hold, breathe out, and then hold for the same number of counts throughout.

How to do box breathing 📖
Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to master the box breathing method right away. Just have a go and see
1. Breathe out slowly, releasing all the air from your lungs.
2. Breathe in through your nose as you slowly count to four in your head. Be conscious of how the air fills your lungs and stomach.
3. Hold your breath for a count of four.
4. Exhale for another count of four.
5. Hold your breath again for a count of four.
6. Repeat for three to four rounds.

When you worry about what others think of you just remember that they are also worrying about what other people think of them. Everyone is in their own head, worried about their own life! Ask yourself this question if you worry what other people think of you: what am I afraid will happen if someone thinks a bad thought about me? The answer to this question will show you what belief system may need to be healed/re-wired. Is the thought true? Mindfulness can help make the unconscious, conscious.

If a child has ARFID, waiting until they are hungry won’t work. The fear of eating exceeds any desire to eat.

In other words: heightened anxiety = high hyper vigilance = high sensory sensitivities = LOTS OF FEAR.

ARFID is often mistaken for being an eating disord

ARFID is often mistaken for being an eating disorder seen in children only. However, did you know that ARFID can affect anyone at any age?

Similarly to children, adults with ARFID will display restriction, avoidance, and aversion to food that can lead to significant nutritional deficiencies.

An adults who is labelled as a picky eater could be struggling with ARFID. It is therefore important to pay attention to signs and symptoms and not to judge someone eating habits.
You never know what they may be struggling with.

ARFID and comorbidities (when a person has more than one disease or condition at the same time).

The current literature on ARFID highlights a high degree of comorbidity with other psychiatric, and neurodevelopmental conditions, with approximately 50% of ARFID cases having a comorbid diagnosis.
 
Here are some examples:

▶️Anxiety disorder commonly co-occur with ARFID. For example one study in 98 patients who met the diagnostic criteria for ARFID, anxiety disorder was present in 60% of patients.

▶️ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is typically diagnosed in childhood. Individuals with ADHD struggle with concentration, impulse control, and hyperactivity, which can set the stage for the development of an eating disorder.

▶️Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopment disorder that tends to be more common among individuals with an eating disorder such as ARFID.

This is not to say that all individual with ARFID have a comorbidity.

The Milk Ladder - What if they react?
If your little one progressed without problems until they reached a certain stage of the ladder then please do not completely eliminate milk again from their diet. You may continue to keep the previous steps in the diet. For example, if they tolerated steps 1 and 2 without any issues but reacted to step 3 then please continue to keep steps 1 and 2 in their diet. This helps to build on tolerance for the next time you try step 3 again. Please allow 2-4 weeks for symptoms to settle before you start again.
