Most people I speak with feel low in mood, need too snooze for at least 30min before they get up and need stimulants such as coffee before they are ready to start their day.
These factors suggests that something in your lifestyle isn’t in order.
There are 6 pillars or lifestyle practices we must ‘do’ in order to live a life full of vitality and wellness (according to ancient philosophy. One of these pillars is sleep. I therefore intent to tell you why sleep is important and what I do to ensure I get enough sleep.
I this blog post I will give you 3 top reasons to why you must ensure you get more sleep, starting from tonight!
1 ) You remove toxins from the brain.
The brain has it own system called the glymphatic system. It is believed than when we sleep, the fluid in our brain increases and you release toxins. In particularly a toxic protein called beta–amyloid from brain tissue. Beta–amyloid is renowned for accumulating in the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s disease.
2) You better your immune system.
Sleep increases specific chemicals called cytokines which help to fight disease and infections. Therefore, if you don’t sleep enough, you may suffer with a poor immune system.
3) You are more likely to be overweight.
Not sleeping enogh is believed to cause wight gain. That’s essentially because of an imbalance in your hormones.
Cortisol levels increase which cause stress and ghrelin (the hormone that tell us to eat) increases. Therefore you will eat more and more and more, not knowing when to stop.
My Sleep Routine
I ensure I am in bed by 10 or 10:30pm and I must say, I tend to get up without an alarm clock.
I am up at 6am. Sleep is my medicine, without it I can’t function. I feel low in mood, low in creativity and I also feel my throat is sore.
Another thing I do is I programme my subconscious mind before I go off to bed.
Let me explain…
Your subconscious mind is where all our automatic reactions, beliefs and life patterns exist. Most of these aren’t really benefiting us. These beliefs and patterns may have been ‘given’ to you by your parents. So some beliefs may be that you aren’t good enough, you don’t feel confident, you feel unloved, ugly and fat.
The good news is: we can change these beliefs. That’s what I do on a daly basis.

Metaphysical teacher Neville Goddard offers us a description of what takes place while we sleep: Sleep is the door through which the conscious, waking mind passes to be creatively joined to the subconscious. Sleep conceals the creative act while the objective world reveals it. In sleep man impresses the subconscious with his conception of himself.
Therefore, refuse to think about all the negativity that happened that day and don’t allow your mind to go into fear. In stead, impress upon your subconscious mind powerful and enlightened thoughts. Pray, meditate, say some affirmations.
I have a board on Pinterest with positive affirmations. I say these and look at these before I sleep because I know that the thoughts I marinate on for 8 hours will come to flourishing. Therefore why not make these thoughts powerful?
So to conclude:
Everything must wait. There is nothing more important than sleep. Not your to do list and not your uni assignment or the washing.
Everything becomes easier as you sleep better. You will start flying through the day and not limping.
