Living The Best Life

How I Maintain Health & Happiness

I believe in order to live your best life one must develop a healthy morning routine.

How we start the day sets the tone for the rest of the day or even week. It’s never too late to start if you haven’t yet developed one. Mornings are after all a chance for us to start all over again.

In this blog post I am going to share with you how I start my mornings. I hope you find it inspiring and more so, I hope that today you decide to develop your own healthy morning routine that will set you up for living YOUR best life.

1) Early Start

I have always been a morning person so getting up at 5:30am comes natural to me. I believe an early night and early start to the day was a habit developed in childhood. So I am thankful to my mother who had strict bed time routines for my siblings and I as we were growing up. I get so much done by waking up early, and it really does set the tone for the rest of the day!

Oh, and I always make my bed..mummy taught me well haha

2) Exercise

At least twice a week I pay a visit to the gym. Like bone, muscles are active tissues, and women tend to lose muscle every decade. Therefore I believe it’s crucial to fit in weight-bearing exercise since decreased muscle mass slows down metabolism.

I practise yoga at least 2-3 times a week but I find that combining yoga with the gym gives me the best results. I started exercising from a very young age, so exercise is a natural habit to me. It’s on my top list of values so it comes first.

I always pay attention to the morning sky on my way to the gym and feel grateful for being alive.

3) Gratitude and Praise

I see mornings as my sacred time so after a nice shower I make myself an organic milky soya coffee. I will usually sit in front of the fire and give praise for at list 3 aspects in my life.

For example, this week I have felt an immense gratitude for feeling contentment. I think this is because of the fact that I feel more present in my life. It’s a feeling I can only describe as peaceful. I trust the process of life as I know everything always happens for my best.

My health and well-being is one aspect I’m consciously grateful for a daily basis.

Most of us live very turbulent lives and it is easy to feel internally turbulent just as the world around us. The problem with that is that you may start to live your life unintentionally.

I feel that a daily spiritual practice has helped me to live my life intentionally. I am therefore committed to my spiritual practise which involves praying, meditation, affirmations and inspirational readings.

4) Healthy Breakfast – The 1-2-3 Way

I finish my morning routine with a healthy 1-2-3 breakfast. Meaning, I never start my day with one food group. What does this mean? Let me put this into context.

So I would not have cereal with milk as this would mainly be a carbohydrate rich meal. This would leave me hungry shortly after and it doesn’t help me to maintain healthy weight.

Instead, I would have carbohydrates, protein and vegetables with every main meal. So it would look something like this:

0% Greek Yogurt and Muesli with a handful of nuts and a handful of berries OR an omelette with added mushroom, onions , tomatoes and spinach with buttered wholegrain bread.

Some days I’ll make my delicious 1-2-3 smoothie!

By including more food groups with your breakfast you make it a low GI meal, meaning the energy in the meal is released slowly and steadily. The benefits include:

  • Less snacking mid morning
  • Maintain healthy weight
  • Lose weight
  • Avoid high blood sugar levels in people with diabetes (Type 1 and Type 2 and Gestational Diabetes)

The 1-2-3 Healthy Eating Approach has helped people lose weight and maintain healthy weight. In fact, I started using the tool in women with Gestational Diabetes (diabetes in pregnancy) and it has helped some of them avoid high blood sugar readings after meals. By going 1-2-3, some did not need medication! I always try and use a food first approach with my clients as I believe food can be used as medicine in some cases.

5) Work-Work-Work-Work-Work-Work

I love being a dietitian so a Monday morning is just as exciting as a Friday morning. In the past, I have had jobs I was very dissatisfied with and it made me lazy and bored. We all have a gift and we all have something we are drawn too. Whether that’s animal welfare, gardening or fashion, your passion isn’t random so follow it. Your passion will take you places you could never dream of. I know this sounds cliché but it is so true. I decided a long time ago that I was going to live the life I envisioned for myself and today I look back and think ‘Thank God I did’.
